Career Field and Job-Related Activities

I want to work in Public Relations for many reasons. I really enjoy communication and working with other people. I like to help solve problems and work towards a better solution, especially when it involves a great deal of factors. I also enjoy mediating and solving disputes between people. I feel good when I can help people get to an agreement. Also, I enjoy the challenge that would come with putting a positive spin on a bad situation. I think that it would need a great deal of writing skill and creativity to achieve such an outcome, and I would take pleasure in that challenge a great deal.

Prospective Employers and Jobs

Many large companies are always in need of Public Relations professionals to help with their consumers and related needs, such as:

·         Press releases are needed many times to help deal with situations concerning the public, things that a public relations worker would either write or review

·         Officials will often provide advice and guidance for press releases

·         Advising and overseeing the documentation for product recalls and other such situations involving a recall of products

·         External-operational business writing is done by public relations officials, especially when there is a dispute between companies

·         Any and all operations that are done in front of the public and may affect the image of the company may be assessed by a public relations official

Job Requirements

Careers in public relations will have many different requirements based on the location or function of the company, but most require:

·         B.A. in English with an emphasis in professional writing

·         A minor in Business with help greatly

·         Work experience such as internships or jobs within the public relations or communications field

·         Experience with a public relations agency

Current Qualifications

I’ve completed these steps towards getting a position within the public relations field:

·         Experience within the communications society at UNCW

·         More than 25 credit hours towards a B.A.in English (3.0 GPA)

Goals

I want to do the following as part of my B.A. in English program:

·         Take more classes related to business and professional writing

·         Get an English internship at UNCW to help bolster my transcript and resume
